Problems Discovered Associated with Online Learning
Online classes are becoming popular with new opportunities being available each semester thereby enabling non-traditional students to get a degree. Online learning may be self-paced implying that one can stop the course and continue later, or it may be live, online tutor-led classes. Self-paced online learning permits one to study at a pace and time that meets their needs whereas instructor-led training gives one the option of asking questions. Online learning may help one to develop knowledge and job skills from just the comfort of their home. However, the convenience of studying at home also has its own difficulties and just as ground-based classes, online classes at times may result in difficulties or conflicts for those students who register in them.
Some of the problems connected with online learning include;
1. Solitude
Whereas some people may find online studying from home a good opportunity, other people find the loneliness of studying from home very challenging. The lack of comradeship of fellow classmates as well as interaction with the instructor may affect one’s desire to learn. Therefore, if you are a person who enjoys learning with others in one room, then ask a co-worker or friend to join you in your online classes. Switch to live learning in which your fellow students and the instructor can be heard via a telephone call or you may see the tutor’s screen via sharing software programs.
2. Motivation
Online learning needs a time commitment and one may plan to learn online at a particular time every day, but motivation is required for it to happen. Reinforce your own commitment to learn by informing your roommate, boss or your family that you are engaged in online learning and they can reinforce your desire to learn or assist cheer you on. Gaining knowledge or learning new skills may also assist your career and personal life, giving you additional motivation of sticking with it.
3. Interruptions
Interruptions caused by friends and family while one is engaged in online learning have to be addressed. You can speak with your friends and family to communicate your desire to study and if possible find a room for studying where you can lock the door. Shut other software programs available on your computer and do not respond to or read emails, watch TV, speak on phone while studying online.
4. Computer Issues
If your internet connection is lost, you will have to reconnect in order to rejoin your online class and this may be very frustrating. The software connected with learning online needs minimum computer capabilities for instance minimum internet speed or a certain hard drive space amount for downloads. You may require cable connection or a DSL. If you are taking part in online training live, you will require a VOIP or phone line and an internet connection.
5. Instructor/Student Communication
When participating in online instructor-led training, the learning experience value may be affected by ability of the instructor to keep the students participating and involved. To avoid this problem, it is essential for the students to participate. Whenever any question is presented, you have to respond and in case you have not understood anything presented by the instructor, ask for clarification.
