Create your own personal learning network
Create your own personal learning network – PLN
David Andrade on Google plus shows you how to create your own Personal Learning Network (PLN). This is a very good idea for teachers and professors. If you have a team behind you then in my opinion you are networked with likeminded individuals that share their love of knowledge with you of what works and what doesn’t work. I know that’s a mouthful but when you link with other teachers and with the tools that you use every day in the classroom then you always have a resource to help you out. Who wants to teach today without help? I know of no one that wants to tackle the online tools, cloud computing, hardware, and advancing their students in the fine art of learning all of the new technology gadgetry available to teachers and professors today by themselves.
You are far better off if you have a team to help you out, and that is what PLN is all about. If you plan to use ck-12 for your class textbook, then link to them online through social networks. If you enjoy twitter, then link up to the teachers using hash tags like #edchat #edtech and #education. If you need ideas for the classroom, then link to teachers that teach your subject.
David Andrade shows you how to link up so that the PLN can be the best service tool for you as a teacher. As David has pointed out; “A PLN is a place to Connect – Collaborate – Contribute”. “Teachers become: Aware, Connected, Empowered, Confident, LEARNERS!”
Even if you are restricted at school to what you can link too, having the option at home won’t be a hassle, and some teachers have already found that they had the beginnings of a good PLN and they didn’t know there was a name for this.
There is a wealth of information online for teachers. Some are resources for you to use in your classroom that were made by teachers like you. I am sure you have a wealth of information that you would love to share too. When teachers get together as a team then students learn content better because teachers share their love of knowledge of what works and what doesn’t. Plus they are just a text away from getting help. Teachers can get advice on new tools, share advice on what doesn’t work for you, and why. You have a win-win team behind you.
Technology is great for teachers as long as you use it to your advantage. PLN helps teachers in every area of their expertise. Below is a number of links to help you get started. The first one I really liked. The second one is great also. The third is some extra ideas to using your PLN.

A tool for teachers
While many people don’t mind using news readers like feed burner I learned about a service that you can sign up for that gives you a page for you to create that you add all of your feeds too. I created one using a couple hours per day for two days. Yes this seems long but you could do this in a weekend. Or devote 30 minutes per day during a week until you are set up. The page is nice you can have a decent choice of color layouts, text size, font, and you get to name your page anything you like. You can make your page private or public too. I chose this over feed readers because I can see the title and brief description of the feed, and if it doesn’t interest me I can move on. The other thing is the feed is not taking up space on MY computer. This is a plus. Instead of using a feed reader that you install or one located online and having to constantly update yourself just grab the RSS URL add it to your page, and you know exactly where it is. I keep mine one click away. It is my homepage. You can’t beat that. I have never missed anything. The place to set up is at protopage.com. If you need any help setting up let me know in the comment section. If I can’t help, then I will find someone that can.
Yes I realize that many of you have this set up already. But when school starts teachers are strapped for time, and who knows you might be missing a gem that you did not know existed online. Whatever the case I hope this can help you. If anything hopefully you will smile in knowing that a bunch of us are doing our best to look out for you.
